What do Chinese high school sophomores know about NRDC?
More than we think as it turns out. We noted last week that NRDC’s naval sonar litigation in the US found its way into the “Annual Selected Readings for China’s High School Students” Continue reading 阅读全文 Add comment 发表评论(0)

The New Mountains and Water
Last weekend over the Qing Ming Festival holiday, I happened across an excellent series of photos by the Chinese photographer Yao Lu (姚璐) at the 798 Photo Gallery. I had first been introduced to Yao Lu’s work by my friend Li Bo, head of China’s first environmental NGO Friends of Nature (English link). Yao’s work made a deep impression on me at that time, but I’d lost track of the photos and could not remember who had done the work. So I was happy to stumble across them again at 798. The photos are surprising because, from afar, they look … Continue reading 阅读全文 Add comment 发表评论(0)
Greenlaw goes Hollywood
We generally spend our days buried in environmental law and policy. Little did we know that our colleagues in New York were spending their nights running with Zhang Ziyi. The press reported as follows: 章子怡于北京时间今日出席美国自然资源保护委员会(Natural Resources Defense Council)举办的第十一届Forces for Nature慈善活动。Zhang Ziyi today (Beijing time) appeared at the Natural Resources Defense Council’s 11th Forces for Nature fundraiser. That’s all the Hollywood we’ll have on Greenlaw for now.
Pandas (and Lawyers)
We were in Chengdu over the past few days holding a training on resolution of environmental disputes in China through negotiation. Our trainers and collaborators on the program came from the Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program. Many thanks to Stephan, Maggie and Brian. It was a few days well spent with a group of fantastic Chinese environmental lawyers and some experts on negotiations of the highest caliber. For several years, NRDC has been working with lawyers and judges in China to promote better ways to handle environmental disputes. We believe that lawyers have a role to play as problem-solvers, … Continue reading 阅读全文 Add comment 发表评论(0)
Enforcement Ideas from Sunny California – Port of LA Redux
We mentioned last week that we visited the Port of LA during our trip to the US. Qie Jianrong, a well-known environmental journalist for the Legal Daily, has written an excellent piece on the NRDC Port of Los Angeles litigation, and the subsequent clean air action plan that developed from the litigation. The key point here is that regulatory gaps and lax enforcement allowed the largest source of pollution in Los Angeles to emit for many years virtually unabated. Community action and strong support from local politicians drove the creation of a privately negotiated environmental protection plan that is protecting … Continue reading 阅读全文 Add comment 发表评论(0)
Environmental Enforcement Ideas from Sunny California. Episode #2 – Give Citizens the Right to Enforce Environmental Laws in Court
Our Chinese delegation spent a day visiting the Port of Los Angeles last week, which is one of the largest sources of pollution in Los Angeles. By one estimate, 1,200 annual premature deaths are connected to air pollution from the ports. Despite these harms, the port was poorly regulated by federal, state and local environmental authorities. And even in the face of repeated complaints from local residents, the port and other responsible parties did not take action. It was a lawsuit by NRDC and several other local groups against an expansion to the port that ultimately drove the port to … Continue reading 阅读全文 Add comment 发表评论(0)
Air Pollution Regulation in the US – Hitting the Road
Greenlaw is hitting the road next week to visit California with a delegation from China. We will be talking with some of the leading experts on air pollution regulation and enforcement in the US and reporting back on how those experiences can be relevant to China. We’ll blog from San Francisco, Sacramento and the ever-smoggy streets of Los Angeles. Stay tuned.
