Zhejiang province people’s procuratorate and the provincial environmental protection department recently issued “Opinions on Actively Making Use of Civil and Administrative Procuratorial Functions to Strengthen Environmental Protection,” which require procuratorates and environmental protection bureaus of varying levels within the province to use judicial tools to advance environmental enforcement and management. Thirty four environmental organizations issue joint letter on heavy metal pollution (Google translation) Led by the Institute for Public and Environmental Affairs and the Beijing-based Friends of Nature, a group of 34 environmental organizations issued a joint letter last week calling on electronics manufacturers to take responsibility for their heavy metal pollution. The 2010 Annual Report on China's Environment: Friends of Nature's China Green Book

Last Friday, Beijing-based NGO Friends of Nature (En) released its Annual Report on China’s Environment and Development 2010, a collection of articles from some of China’s top environmental groups, legal and environmental scholars, and journalists.  FON has published an annual Green Book since 2006 and this has become the definitive account of the top issues in environmental protection each year since. Environmental Public Interest Litigation and the Vitality of Environmental Courts: The development and future of environmental courts in China

Guiyang promotes eco-civilization

guiyang3On January 8, 2010, the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial People’s Congress approved a local legislation called “Guiyang City Promoting Eco-civilization Regulation” (《贵阳市促进生态文明建设条例》). This regulation was first passed by Guiyang City People’s Congress in October of 2009, and it contains provisions on environmental public interest litigation and other important environmental protection measures. Guangzhou Maritime Court orders tannery to pay 62,500 RMB in compensation (Google translation)
The Dongtai tannery in Panyu District of Guangzhou was ordered to pay 62,500 RMB in compensation for damages from several incidents of illegal waste water release in 2008, bringing another environmental public interest litigation case to a close. China’s Environmental Heroes: Echoing Steppe Fights Pollution in Inner Mongolia

We’ve devoted a lot of coverage to China’s environmental heroes. While China’s heavyweight environmental champion, Wang Canfa, has garnered much coverage in the press, China is also filled with heroes that most people never hear about. The following case in Inner Mongolia is one such example.
